The Greek words for “a loud cry” are “phone megale.” Transposing these words give us the familiar “mega-phone.” Jesus’ loud cry was a shout of triumph to be heard as far as his voice would reach!
In his beautiful book, Reliving the Passion, Walter Wangerin Jr. tells us that this mega-phone shout was very familiar to the centurion waiting at the foot the cross. It usually came at the end of a battle announcing that the soldier had won the battle or that the king had won the war! But how could Jesus shout like a victor?
Anyone who has experienced the profound release and relief that comes from the forgiveness of Christ knows that this was a fierce battle and a monumental victory over the greatest enemy we’ll ever face.
The pardon received from Christ sets the soul and spirit of a person completely free. It also opens a whole new path of relationship with God. It sets in motion the work of the Holy Spirit who renews and restores our lives day-by-day. This is good news and must be given to everybody everywhere – to every home, every heart.
We frequently receive testimonies from EHC’s work in prisons, like the report from Argentina included in this issue. These prisoners know the joy and peace of Christ in spite of their very difficult circumstances. Although their debt to society is not fully paid, the full payment for the price of their sin has been made. They smile. They sing and praise their Saviour.
As you celebrate Easter this year, I invite you to remember this extraordinary story of victory and to let it soak your heart. Jesus completely finished the work the Father gave Him to do so that we could have joy, peace and a future wherever we are. Let’s embrace this Good News and continue to share it with others
[box]The story of Easter is one of complete victory. It begins with a loud cry, a great shout of triumph! It is the voice of Christ announcing the completion of his work. (MATTHEW 27:50; JOHN 19:30)[/box]BY JACQUELINE DUGAS, DIRECTOR OF MINISTRIES
